Tamaldi ? - Tambour, by Emmanuel JAY, is a study for marching drum. As the title suggests, this ABA piece keeps scattering the listener between shifting time signatures, dynamics and beat subdivisions. The A section remains much the same from the introduction to the finale. Care should be taken to keep it steady. Set piece for the CMF second cycle, year one, marching drum. The lilt of the compound metre falls on the first beat. In the B section, where the whole scattering effect plays out, the stresses of each bar need to be felt clearly.
Written for a single player, it can also be practised by several players in unison.
