Casse-tête 2008 - Tambour: a repertoire piece for marching drum, by Emmanuel JAY.
Contemporary in its writing, the piece mixes genres and asks the player to hold the pulse internally. Metric modulations fill the piece with effects of speeding up and slowing down, and call for a very solid rhythmic footing. The piece is delicate to bring off: the dynamics need to be strongly marked to achieve the intended effect. Downloadable sheet music. Set piece for the CMF Prix d'Excellence for marching drum and for the Baguettes d'Or competition of the École Française du Tambour. The unconventional metric modulations are marked in the score, and understanding and mastering them is essential to placing the stresses that give the music its swing.
Written for a single player, it can also be practised by several players in unison.
