La dialectique volatile – timbales: a repertoire piece for timpani, by Jean-Luc RIMEY-MEILLE. A title from the musical theatre repertoire.
Commissioned by Jean Fessard. The story is not only ornithological: through a rambling Prévert-style inventory built on the repetition of a first syllable, it runs through words beginning cui, then cu, ending with the familiar birdcall. The tone is light, yet deliberately overdramatised by the stage directions in the score. The timpani part first supports the voice through the inventory, then speaks in its own right with an oriental motif built on alternating groups of two and three. After the inventory returns, a development of the oriental material leads to a closing chorale that brings back the main theme at the very end. The reference to César Cui is bound up with the piece both thematically and musically: he was a composer born in Russia in 1835 who died in 1913.
