Eight Pieces for Four Timpani (one player), by Elliott Carter: a landmark of the timpani repertoire, for a single player on four drums. Contemporary writing.
Six of the pieces were written in 1949 and revised in 1966 with the percussionist Jan Williams; two more, Canto and Adagio, were added at that point. Carter conceived them as studies in metric modulation and in four-note chords. This is a collection rather than a suite: the composer advises playing no more than four in a row. The eight pieces are Saëta, Moto perpetuo, Adagio, Recitative, Improvisation, Canto, Canaries and March, each dedicated to a percussionist. The writing explores techniques then new to the timpani: playing with the butt of the stick, moving the beating spot across the head, glissandi and sympathetic vibration. Carter has added detailed performance notes on the choice of drums and sticks, on strokes, effects and articulation.
