Trommel-Suite, by Siegfried Fink: a suite for solo snare drum, published in the Solo für Percussion series.
It is a founding work of the repertoire. Fink was the first composer to draw on the seventeen tone colours the snare drum can produce, and to set them within a genuine musical argument, where traditional writing sits alongside aleatoric passages. The suite has five movements: Intrada, Toccata, Mista, Cadenza and Marcia. It calls for changes of implement along the way — stick and brush in the Mista, tom sticks with the snares off in the cadenza — and for the beating spot to move constantly, from the rim to the centre of the head. These demands have made it one of the most frequently played snare drum solos in competitions. The performance instructions are given in German, English and French. Allow around eight and a half minutes of music. 8 pages.
